| This may be a real simple problem, but I am having trouble loading the Real-time graphics software on my laptop. I am running XP and get a message C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT, The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications... when I try to run the setup program. I have successfully installed the software on my work desktop without a problem. Any ideas? Thanks. -- Pete |

Does this happen when you run the Setup.exe program that installs the software, or at some other time ?
Do any of the Setup screens appear as when it installed on your other computer ?
Are both the portable and the desktop system running XP, or just the portable.

The installation program that we use for the WIN-BMC products is an old version of InstallShield that has been quite reliable through the years. The error message that you list is not only a well documented InstallShield error, but a problem with 16-bit programs running under XP in general. Here is just one of many web site discussions about it that we found with a simple Google search:
" When I try to launch the program on Windows 2000/XP, I get a 16 bit Windows Subsystem error referring to the file "AUTOEXEC.NT".
The complete error message is usually: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."
The error usually indicates that the system file "AUTOEXEC.NT" is missing or damaged. You may be able to resolve the problem by copying "AUTOEXEC.NT" from the '\Windows\repair' folder to the '\Windows\System32' folder (On Windows 2000, copy from 'WINNT\repair' to 'WINNT\System32'). If the problem persists, you will need to contact Microsoft or search for a solution using an internet search engine. We also recommend downloading the most recent virus definitions for your anti-virus software and performing a system scan. "
In all cases it points to a damaged Windows XP. If you are unable to fix Windows XP to the point where you can run 16-bit programs, you can just copy our QCW32 directory from your desktop computer to your portable. The only other thing you would have to do is to make sure that the QCW32 directory is in the system PATH, since that is where our DLLs are located.
